Damselfish Embryos as a Bioindicator for Military Contamination on Coral Reefs at Johnston Atoll, Pacific Ocean

چکیده
This study investigated the association between sediment contamination, PCB accumulation in adult nesting males and occurrence of embryonic abnormalities damselfish, Abudefduf sordidus, from two sites with high contamination three “reference” (contaminants very low or not measurable) within Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific Ocean. Developmental were assessed damselfish embryos collected field during four natural spawning seasons (1996, 1998, 1999, 2001). Laboratory incubations abnormal demonstrated that observed lethal. PCBs measured fish years. Mean whole-body concentrations total ranged 364.6 to 138,032.5 ng/g lipid. A significant residue–effect relationship was found concentration embryo abnormalities. The positively related (other contaminants also evaluated including metals dioxins). demonstrates utility using as a bioindicator tool for monitoring coral reefs. Effects of depth, habitat, and water motion on the abundance and distribution of ciguatera dinoflagellates at Johnston Atoll, Pacific Ocean
A major impediment to understanding the seemingly random occurrence of ciguatera toxicity is uncertainty regarding the field ecology of benthic dinoflagellates that introduce toxins into the coral reef food web. Although broad generalizations have been made, past studies have often yielded contradictory results, particularly between ecological patterns documented in the Pacific versus the Carib...
متن کاملSpecificity in communities of Symbiodinium in corals from Johnston Atoll
The diversity of endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium) in corals at Johnston Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean was assessed using both the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of the nuclear rDNA and chloroplast 23S rDNA. More sequences were recovered from corals using the ITS2 primers than with the chloroplast 23S primers, a finding that reflects both the higher taxonomic resolu...
متن کاملVertical and Horizontal Genetic Connectivity in Chromis verater, an Endemic Damselfish Found on Shallow and Mesophotic Reefs in the Hawaiian Archipelago and Adjacent Johnston Atoll
Understanding vertical and horizontal connectivity is a major priority in research on mesophotic coral ecosystems (30-150 m). However, horizontal connectivity has been the focus of few studies, and data on vertical connectivity are limited to sessile benthic mesophotic organisms. Here we present patterns of vertical and horizontal connectivity in the Hawaiian Islands-Johnston Atoll endemic thre...
متن کاملCoral Reefs as a Life Supporting System
Coral reefs are among the most productive and biologically diversified ecosystems of the world. Long time accumulation of calcium carbonate deposited by many living organisms is the basis of reef formation. Thousands of species use the complicated 3-dimensional topography as their habitats. Oddly, most coral reefs exist in waters with very little nutrient input, and cycling of nutrients within ...
متن کاملDamselfish are coral fans.
Bustling around their reef homes, Red Sea dascyllus damselfish (Dascyllus marginatus) do quite well out of their co-habiting arrangement with hood coral (Stylophora pistillata). ‘The coral provide the fish with shelter from predators and a place for social interactions and egg laying’, says Nur Garcia-Herrera, from the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Germany. Yet the agreement isn’t entirely one sided...
